COLD, 2018

After a solid week of brittle, pipe-busting, fuel-sucking cold, my dear husband and friends decide it’s time to tour the winter wonderland of Lake Jocassee. No matter that we haven’t hit 40 degrees in days. We put on all our warm clothes and glide the boat slowly through calm, cold water.  We scare up a flock of distant ducks up in Devils Fork branch, and an insistent belted kingfisher escorts us out of his territory on the Thompson River. Everywhere, hidden seeps are revealed by sun reflecting off icicles, or by thin sheaths of ice with water moving snakelike underneath. Crystalline rivers and frozen, truly magical waterfalls help us forget the cold, and we make plans to do this again, immediately. ~K
