NUTS

BAM! Thump-thump-thump-thump… BAM! Thump-thump-thump-thump-thump-thump-thump… BAM! Thump-thump-thump-thump… and on and on it goes. That’s the sound of chestnut oak acorns smacking down onto the tin roof of our kayak sheds. Eight o’clock in the morning, and eight o’clock in the evening, for the past week, like clockwork, down they come. The unloading takes about 45 minutes, tapers off, ends with rising and falling heat of day. The first time I heard the sound it scared the bejeebers out of me, like a pistol shot at close range. Even now it takes getting used to. The nuts are green: theoretically that means the trees are shedding extra acorns to adapt to some unknown stress. What stresses a tree? Heat? Drought? Insects? Cosmic vibrations? ~K
