HEAVEN

The hum of flies near the sunny trailhead gets my attention. I pick apart the sound, trying to figure out how many flies there are, and where. OK, not that many, and not all in the same place. Whew, nothing visibly dead on the trailhead… that’s good. An iridescent green fly with gold metallic highlights explores a leaf under high shade. Pretty, for a fly. Further along, when broken sunlight has completely given way to deep green shade, I’m hearing a different insect, something with a steady monotone between cricket and cicada, but without the cadence of either. I listen until the whine of a mosquito catches up with me. Where the trail winds above a steep wall of rock, a lone cicada tunes up. The strident noise reverberates until I’m near the creek, where water rushing through rocks drowns all other sound. Then, my reward: the song of waterfall cascading over rock escarpment with clear rivulets splashing musically into a shallow pool. All is illuminated by dappled sunlight. Heaven. ~K
