Unbidden, gratitude swells inside me. South Carolina is recognizing it’s first official South Carolina Native Plant Week next week, Oct. 16—20, and the acknowledgment of how important native plants are – anywhere - makes me unreasonably happy. You can read the official Concurrent Resolution here. Also, grateful that some mysteries still stump mankind, like, how DO the monarchs know where to go? And wildly grateful for stretches of roadside where tall grasses wave in the breeze among asters and goldenrod. Grateful that I live in a time which knows butterflies and hummingbirds, and bald eagles and black bears. Grateful for clouds. Grateful that part of my backyard is the world-class South Carolina Botanical Gardens, where I visit a splendid recreation of nature, and part of my front yard is the world-class Jocassee Gorges, which is a splendid creation of nature. Grateful for friends who prod me to look more closely at nature's gifts. ~K
