It’s the end of the day at the end of the year. Ever dependable, the sun sets right at the predicted minute, casting rose-gold glow into a ceiling of cloud, reflecting back onto the calm water of Lake Jocassee. A couple of bass fishermen linger at the dock, reluctant to end a soul-rejuvenating day. No fish to speak of, but oh, what a day. They speak of an osprey and bald eagles, while we watch loons and gulls. There is reverence between us, a leveling of emotion at eleven hundred and ten feet. The new year offers a fresh start for the world at large, but on the dock at Jocassee, this moment will do. ~K
