A long, shrill howl slices the thick stillness of a cold and dark winter night. A coyote, calling family. On most nights the call is answered by a cacophony of yips and yurdels and yowls, blood-curdling to hear until one realizes it is the sound of joyous reunion. Tonight, no one answers. A pause, and another howl, and then another, each growing more desperate, more anguished. Tonight, it is one painful, lonesome sound, carrying through star-lit trees the deep, inconsolable torment of every family ever ripped apart. ~K
