EMERGENCE A male luna moth clings to the stem
Emergence

A male Luna moth clings to the stem of last year’s growth, wings stretched under a weak sun. His recent weeks have been in the safety of a cocoon… the ultimate place to shelter-in. One wonders whether Luna has resented such confinement, or whether he fears the new freedom to fly. After all, everything is different. Once discretely disguised-–soft green body against soft green leaf—now large green wings announce his presence to hungry birds and bats. The voracious appetite which kept his caterpillar-self busy has vanished, and for the rest of his life, Luna will not eat. Without food his energy and life will soon waste away, but for now he can soar, seeing the world from a new, higher, wider perspective. ~K
