The Jocassee Gorges was recently named one of "50 of the World’s Last Great Places—Destinations of a Lifetime" in a special edition of National Geographic magazine. "National Geographic's special recognition of Jocassee Gorges is quite an honor,” said Mark Hall, Jocassee Gorges land manager for the S.C. Department of Natural Resources. “We have one of the great wild places on our planet. It’s an exciting place to be, with the peregrine falcons appearing, more bald eagles showing up, National Geographic Audubon designating Jocassee as an internationally Important Bird Area.
Every tour of Lake Jocassee is uniquely special. We just never know what we're going to see! It could be Oconee Bells blooming, or a bald eagle soaring overhead, or multitudes of butterflies puddling on a rock. Some things, though, we can count on. Do you like waterfalls? Lake Jocassee has waterfalls we can swim under! Do you favor wild mountain rivers? Pristine wilderness rivers flow into and provide the cold, pure water of Lake Jocassee. Enjoy fall’s color explosion, winter’s solitude and abundant waterfowl (starring the ethereal loon), and spring’s rebirth of nature. And of course, summer is for swimming and playing in the waterfalls! You’ll never know what to expect, and you’ll never be disappointed.
THE only NATURALIST-LED TOURS of LAKE JOCASSEE and the JOCASSEE GORGES. THE DIFFERENCE IS KNOWLEDGE, LOVE OF PLACE, PASSION
Enjoy a day white water rafting, ziplining or both with Wild Water. Southern Living has said that rafting the Chattooga River is the “#1 Thing Southerners Must Do”. The Chattooga River is a National Wild and Scenic River, this river status protects and treasures the beauty of this free flowing river. We sure think Southern Living got it right – to experience the river is downright magical. If you have never been rafting on the Chattooga River before, its important to know that there are two different sections of the river that are for commercial rafting – Section 3 and Section 4. Section 3 is an easier stretch of water with mostly Class 2 and 3 rapids and one big rapid at the end, and is suitable for ages 8 and up. Section 4 is the pinnacle of Southeastern white water with its famous Five Falls of tight, technical Class 4 and 4+ rapids in a beautiful gorge. Suitable for ages 12 and up, we recommend first timers start with Section 3 and work up to Section 4 for the best experience.
