To paraphrase a famous movie line, it’s August and I have a feeling I’m not in Florida anymore. If you live in Florida in August, as I did for most of my life, you could pull up a chair, any chair, at 8am, sit down and simply sweat. No effort required. Cheaper than buying a sauna, I used to tell myself. It is why the Great Migration occurs every year at this time, clearly witnessed from the heights of Caesar’s Head or Sassafras Mountain, of thousands upon thousands of Floridians heading north to the mountains of North and South Carolina, and for the truly sophisticated traveler, to the shores of Lake Jocassee. Cool, dry mornings and evenings, low 80’s by mid-day, experienced while immersed in the clear, refreshingly chilled waters of Lake Jo. July is the hottest summer month here, and August signals the early beginnings of Fall. What a place to live.~B
